Chin Augmentation-Genioplasty

Chin augmentation using surgical implants, or surgical correction of an underdeveloped jaw (genioplasty)  can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the face. By adding support to the jaw line and chin region ,chin augmentation can improve chin and jaw definition, enhance neck contours, and even improve marionette lines (between the corners of the mouth and chin).

Chin augmentation is most commonly performed by placement of a specially shaped implant placed through a very small incision hidden under the chin or inside the mouth, generally leaving no noticeable scar. Implants most commonly used are made of a solid silicone gel material. Plastic (polypropylene) and Gortex (PTFE) are also, but less commonly used. After placement in a carefully developed surgical pocket, the implant becomes tightly conformed to the jaw line, and takes on a natural feel. The implant can remain in place indefinately, much like a breast implant, or can be removed at any time. Chin implants are most commonly placed under a light anesthesia as a short outpatient procedure.
True Genioplasty  is performed by surgically elongating the chin region of the mandible by partially dividing the chin horizontally and sliding the chin foward, and allowing it to heal permanently in its ideal position and length. It is most often performed when other corrective skeletal-facial deformities are treated, such as a small mandible or narrow  or underdeveloped upper jaw or facial clefts. It is generally performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery center setting. While technically reversible, it is meant to be a permanent correction for a congenitally  small or poorly defined chin.

Chin augmentation is often performed as an isolated procedure to correct an underdeveloped chin, or poor jaw and neck contour. However, it can also be combined with  neck liposuction, facelift surgery, rhinoplasty ,as well as corrective jaw surgery to achieve better facial balance.
